Keeping track of the transactions is the kind of challenge electronic point of sale data systems meet best. Getting the system that suits your operation can digitize your operation into the black. But the wrong system can confuse employees, irritate customers and charge you for the privilege.

Here are some pointers to help you find the system for you. Decide what you need: Point of sale, whether in retail or F&B, should provide managers with information to allow them to control the business. Vendors can help you determine the kinds of reports you need.

Private clubs may want a strong back-office system that flows into the front end with a focus on members. Other systems focus on the public daily fee courses, where reservation software needs to be integrated.

Go shopping: “You’ve got to get out of the Dark Ages and ask the questions,” said Brock. Explain what you want the system to do. Be clear about your budget. Ask for details on the kinds of reports the system will produce.

Several companies offer modular systems, so you can buy the piece you need now and add others later. But be sure the products you need — and the ones you already have — will all fit together in the long run.

User friendly: Get a system the staff can use and train them. Enhancements to the system should be frequently available and easy to install. Some vendors publish an annual report of all enhancements for its users. If your vendor doesn’t, you should ask for it.
