Alberta Golf Association standardizes on Jencess Windows System

News Article as published in 2003 Edition of The Alberta Golfer magazine,

Passing the Torch

As the clock struck twelve for the last time in 2002, it was time to say good-bye to a loyal and trusted friend.  You see as 2003 dawned, the Jencess DOS Fair-Ways Handicap software certification expired.  True to its heritage, though, it has opened the door to yet another exciting evolution.

Introduced at the Camrose golf Club in the early 1980’s the Jencess DOS Fair-Ways Handicap software was state of the art.  It was a successful pioneer software program designed to track golf handicaps and it caught on like wildfire throughout Alberta.  In 1995, the program was adopted by Alberta Golf to again take on a new life form as one of the first centralized handicapping programs to be used in Canada.

Over the next eight years the program was installed at over 75% of Alberta Golf’s member clubs.  Exciting new initiatives included year-end Performance Report Cards, individualized membership cards, away course score postings and a central handicap database.

Technological and handicap system advances continued to challenge the capacity of the DOS program.  Finally, with the advent of internet score postings authorized by the USGA/RCGA in 2002, the ability to upgrade the software had been eclipsed. However, with ever an eye on the future, the programmers at Jencess developed a new more powerful version based on a WINDOWS platform.

Launched in Ontario, the program was also adopted by the BCGA and Alberta Golf.  The new program transfers scores via the internet and the graphics ability of the new software is outstanding.  Additionally, internal networking at the club level can now be easily established.

In March, Alberta Golf circulated upgrade program CD’s which included converted membership handicap information.

As Alberta Golf’s centralized handicap system software continues to evolve all participating clubs will gain full advantage of free and timely upgrades.  It is a membership service that can be accessed by every member to track their improvement and even to ensure the honesty of fellow buddies.

So as we wave a solemn goodbye to the DOS handicap system we need only pause momentarily as its offspring promises an exciting future that we won’t want to miss.
